Key Stage 4 curriculum overview:

English Language

The course consists of Paper 1; Explorations in Creative Writing, and Paper 2; Writers’ Viewpoints and perspectives. Each paper is worth 50% of the final grade. Both papers cover reading and writing skills which enable pupils to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Speaking and Listening is an endorsed component of the English course which requires students to participate in a speaking and listening presentation. Although Speaking and Listening doesn’t contribute to the final English grade, students do gain a certificate with either a distinction, merit, pass, or ‘not classified’.

English Literature

This course consist of two papers. In Paper 1,  students respond to questions on Shakespeare (Macbeth) and 19th Century Fiction (A Christmas Carol.) Paper 1 is worth 40% of the final mark. In Paper 2 students are assessed on their understanding of Modern Literature (An Inspector Calls) and a Poetry Anthology (Power and Conflict.) Within the poetry section, students compare two poems studied within the anthology as well as analysing unseen poems. Paper 2 is worth 60% of the overall grade.
